Leeds Castle and Canterbury Cathedral

On Friday October 15th, I went on another school trip to Canterbury Cathedral and Leeds castle.  I bet you can guess by now that the bus trip was 2.5 hours.  The cathedral was built in   Our tour guide from the bus wasn't allowed to show us around the cathedral for whatever reason so we walked through it without guidance.  If you didn't realize, that was just my excuse for why I don't know much about the cathedral.  However, I recognize that I should know more so when I find the time I'll research a bit.  In the meantime, I have pictures!

Leeds castle dates back to 1119 and was built by Robert de Crevecoeur.  The castle was first built as a fortress but Henry VIII transformed it into a royal palace for his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.  It is located on 500 acres of land which includes an aviary, golf course, maze, and gardens.  When first entering the grounds you see how much Lady Baillie, the last owner loved birds by all of the varieties still wandering the premises.

The castle actually has a real moat!  Cool huh?  The last owner, Lady Baillie an Anglo-American heiress redid a lot of the interior.  Upon her death, the castle was left to a charitable trust, allowing it to open to the public.  It is also used today for conferences, weddings and other large scale gatherings.

Many of the renovations to the castle by Lady Baillie were done between 1936 and 1967.  Therefore, a large difference between some of the rooms can be seen.

  1. I would love a library like that. Living in a castle might be fun, but I sure would not want to be the one paying the heating bills! 18 days and counting down until we see you! Love you, MOM

  2. The castle is lovely and nicely decorated. Very homey looking. However it is much larger than we need. We are looking to downsize instead of going larger. Gpa and I looked at two condos on Sunday afternoon. We are a bit away yet, but need to see what will be out there for us.

The leaves have been beautiful this year, but have been falling at a fast rate now. Our grass is covered with leaves because they didn't get raked last week due to a lot of rain.

We love your blogs and look forward to them. You are an excellent writer---maybe another career choice?

Gpa and I are going to a movie this morning and then to a tea at church.

    Much love, Gma and Gpa

  3. Nice pictures. I especially like the bookshelves. I want them! Also the amazingly high ceilings would be cool, but as your mom says, not the heating bills to go with them.

When I was in England (on semester break), I went to Canterbury, but not to Leeds. It's neat to see both.

I'm sure you're looking forward to your mom's visit -- it will be so great for all of you!

    Love, Aunt Melanie
